One main thing I think that people don't realize is that we also implemented some features that are truly representative of using a search engine versus just a database search. For instance, the search engine does phonetic matching on words entered. Basically it matches words that "sound like" the word you entered. And it does this for words in the entire text of the book, which is why so many results are being returned. Additionally, it is doing something called "stemming" where it will take the base of a word and all of it's varying endings (e.g. work, worker, working, etc.) and use those words for searching. It's giving you a broad set of results and allowing you to filter accordingly. We will continue to refine the search relevancy as we go and as always continue to listen to our users to help make the new features the most user-friendly as possible!
