Thanks Monica for this great post! One main thing I think that people don't realize is that we also implemented some features that are truly representative of using a search engine versus just a database search. For instance, the search engine does phonetic matching on words entered. Basically it matches words that "sound like" the word you entered. And it does this for words in the entire text of the book, which is why so many results are being returned. Additionally, it is doing something called "stemming" where it will take the base of a word and all of it's varying endings (e.g. work, worker, working, etc.) and use those words for searching. It's giving you a broad set of results and allowing you to filter accordingly. We will continue to refine the search relevancy as we go and as always continue to listen to our users to help make the new features the most user-friendly as possible!

NVDA is developing very quickly and hopefully Outlook and a few other programs which aren't working yet will be made accessible. Jamie and Mick the main developers are an inspiration and the new 2009.1 version should be available soon with IE List links Insert + F7 featured.

I pulled this from the Tidbits archive; don't know if it's what you want, but it would work: Fred's Head Companion points out that it is quite possible to send text messages via e-mail. If you know your friends' phone numbers and the carrier they're on, you can easily send email text messages to their cell phones. MakeUseOf.com has compiled a list of over sixty domestic and international carriers and the corresponding email address formats used for each.

Added to this, if you download all of your books in the same folder, you only need one copy of the CSS file, so don't worry if your computer asks you if you want to write over that file. You won't hurt anything if you say Yes or No. Either way, it's all good.

Hi Shane. I'm not sure I follow you. This is a one-time fix that you can do and forget about. There is no need to rename files or do anything else after taking these steps. When you want to read your book, you'll just press enter on it. Renaming files to the .html extension has two drawbacks. First, you have to take time to rename. Second, if you rename your xml file, you can't use it properly if you decide to use the daisy file on another device like the Stream or Book Port. With this method, xml files are set up to open in the web browser automatically without any further actions by the user.

It is easier if you just rename the XML file. Change the .xml extension to .html; that will open it in your default web browser.

Illness - sterlize your toothbrush

Monica:

Many years ago I suffered with months of pneumonia until I started sterilizing my tooth brush every time I used it. Poor alcohol (or similar) over the brush, don't dip the brush into the alcohol. Or, just buy a couple of six-pack brushes for a buck and throw the brush away after one use.

Honestly, the pneumonia was gone in less than a week. It could have been a coincidence, but I still thank the person who gave me this tip.

Hope you feel better. Immediately! Well, soon, anyway.

Happy holidays.

John, this is just a bit of new technology. It isn't about how tech savvy you are. Some sighted people don't catch on at first. Speech does add a bit of a wrinkle. If it makes you feel better, it took me a couple of years to understand how to make bookmarklets work with speech.

You still use Skype, right? Once Christmas is over, let's get on Skype, and I'll show you how it works. You're so creative and love so much variety. You'll have a blast once you see how it works. You'll be an unstoppable force and we won't be able to hold you back! Then you can show your handiwork to your cousin, who is probably totally clueless about bookmarklets. Lol. :D

I was trying to figure it out earlier, but I'm so tech illiterate. Even though I try to make myself believe otherwise. I'll get it when I have more time. It does sound like a cool feature, though.
