Stress Fracture

I have a stress fracture involving the palm of my left hand. Ouch! It developed at some point yesterday evening or early this morning. It makes typing a slow, laborious process. I’m using Dragon Naturally Speaking to dictate as much as possible. I had started using it because of pain from a shoulder injury. Now I’m truly dependent on dictation though. I’m still feeling awkward with talking instead of typing. It seems like ideas flow more smoothly when I type. Verbalizing my thoughts takes some sort of extra step that seems clumsy somehow. It’s like the thoughts come from different parts of my brain when I have to talk things out. I don’t like it very much, even though I know it’s best for me. I know I need to be grateful that I have Dragon, and I am. I still notice the difference though. I’m a visual learner and don’t learn well from the auditory side of things. I need to see or touch what I’m learning about. I’m curious about how this all works and why talking is so much harder for me than typing or writing in Braille. I’m thinking that if I understand why, maybe I can change it or compensate somehow. If you have any ideas, I’d be interested in what you’ve got to say. For now, I’m off to listen to an audiobook.

i can agree that talking and typing involve different perts of the brain, I once had to dictate what I wanted to write in an essay on my GRE exam! That was very hard, not only because I had to talk it out, but I would have to get the lady to repeat some of what I’d written, which just kept breaking the rhythm and didn’t feel natural at all. I think that I need to learn to get my talking up to that level though, and am now working on it. I guess it’ll get easier to do and smoother with practice. I’m sorry for that injury and hope it heals soon.

I hope that stress fracture healed without incident. I found your blog on the Bookshare volunteer list. Mind if I add you to my friends’ list?
