With the help of many dedicated volunteers
and staff members, Bookshare has just passed the 42,000 book milestone. What’s
especially exciting about this milestone is that the quality of the scanned books has steadily improved, and the books are from a wide range of categories and for a wide range of age levels too. What’s really cool is something that’s
going on under the surface that the climbing book total isn’t showing. Many older scanned books that had quality issues have been replaced with high-quality
scans and publisher quality versions. So while new books are being added, staff
and volunteers are also shoring up the foundation of the collection to make sure that every book is a pleasure to read.

If you looked at Bookshare during its first
few years of existence and wrote it off because of the poor quality of the scanned
books, it’s time for a second look. You’re in for a treat. I’m
so proud to see what a few dedicated people have done and are continuing to do.
